Quinoa Pizza Bites – Cooking with Kids Recipe

If you are a quinoa (“keen-wa”) lover, this is for you!  I say “if”, because half of my family approved, but the other half didn’t.  If you don’t like quinoa, you probably won’t like this recipe.  However if you’re open to new foods or love quinoa, this is a homerun!  It’s the perfect finger food appetizer for the kids and grownups.

Quinoa is a nutritious option, and one of the few foods that contain every essential amino acid, making it a complete protein.  It’s also a great source of iron, potassium and fiber.  And if someone in your family needs gluten-free, this is a great option for them.

OK, let’s start mixing.  Here’s a list of supplies you’ll need:

AGE APPROPRIATE COOKING TASKS

Every child’s ability varies depending on maturity or cognitive and physical ability.  Parents need to use their own discretion when assigning tasks.  These are general guidelines for the Quinoa Pizza Bites.

Younger than 3 years old

  • Name and count ingredients with child
  • Add ingredients to mixing bowl

3 – 5 years old

  • All of the younger tasks
  • Measure ingredients with assistance
  • Slice pepperoni using a kid-friendly knife
  • Mix ingredients together
  • Scoop mixture into muffin wells with assistance

6 – 7 years old

  • All of the younger tasks
  • Crack eggs into small bowl
  • Independently scoop mixture into muffin wells
  • Press quinoa mixture into muffin wells

8 – 9 years old

  • All of the younger tasks

10 – 12 years old

  • All of the younger tasks
  • Use stovetop to cook quinoa
  • Use the oven to bake mini pizza bites

FRIENDLY REMINDERS:

  • Wash everyone’s hands!
  • Clean all work surfaces before starting.
  • Leave tasting until the end. Your child might not understand the difference between a ready-to-eat ingredient and a raw unsafe ingredient.
  • It is okay for your kitchen to get a little messy.
  • Keep in mind that your child is learning, so patience is key!

Ingredients

  • 1 cup quinoa cooked
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 cup mozzarella cheese shredded
  • ¼ cup pepperoni diced
  • ½ teaspoon basil dried
  • ¼ teaspoon oregano dried
  • pizza sauce for dipping

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350℉.
  • Cook quinoa according to package (typically takes around 15 minutes).
  • Combine quinoa, eggs, cheese, pepperoni and seasoning and mix until fully incorporated.
  • Using a greased or silicone mini muffin pan, divide mixture into muffin wells. Press mixture in firmly using the back of a spoon.
  • Bake for 25 minutes. Serve immediately with pizza sauce for dipping.
