Luckily we always have a stash in the freezer for a quick weeknight meal.  A few years back, I was looking for a new way to incorporate more turkey options into our meal rotation.  This was the result…and they’re delicious!!

One of the best things about this recipe is that it works with both a red and white sauce… or as my kiddos do it, just plain with a little side of ketchup.

You may notice that this recipe has a few more advanced steps, perfect for the older kids.  Keep in mind that raw meat is still a potentially hazardous food.  Be sure to wash hands and anything that touches raw meat thoroughly when finished.  This is a great opportunity to discuss food safety with your children.

Every child’s ability varies depending on maturity or cognitive and physical ability.  Parents need to use their own discretion when assigning tasks.  These are general guidelines for the Perfect Turkey Meatballs.

Younger than 3 years old

  • Name and count ingredients with child
  • Add breadcrumbs, cheese and seasoning to mixing bowl

3 – 5 years old

  • All of the younger tasks
  • Measure breadcrumbs, cheese and seasoning with assistance

6 – 7 years old

  • All of the younger tasks
  • Crack egg into small bowl

8 – 9 years old

  • All of the younger tasks

10 – 12 years old

  • All of the younger tasks
  • Form turkey mixture into meatballs – if parent feels comfortable with them handling raw meat.
  • Use the oven to meatballs


  • Wash everyone’s hands!
  • Clean all work surfaces before starting.
  • Leave tasting until the end. Your child might not understand the difference between a ready-to-eat ingredient and a raw unsafe ingredient.
  • It is okay for your kitchen to get a little messy.
  • Keep in mind that your child is learning, so patience is key!

  • 1 lb turkey ground
  • ¼ cup breadcrumbs
  • 2 Tablespoon Parmesan cheese
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning


  • Preheat oven to 350℉.
  • Combine turkey, breadcrumbs, cheese, egg and seasoning in large bowl until fully incorporated.
  • Form turkey mixture into balls using a 1 Tablespoon scooper. If using your hands, form into round balls using approximately 1 Tablespoon of turkey mixture. Spread evenly across a lined baking sheet.
  • Bake at 350℉ for 25-30 minutes. Serve immediate or freeze for a later meal.


These meatballs freeze really well! Try double or tripling the recipe to fill your freezer with ready-to-go meatballs for your next spaghetti night.
