Apple Cinnamon Oatmeal Breakfast Rounds – Cooking with Kids Recipe

Apple Cinnamon Oatmeal Rounds - by Little Spoons and SpiceApple and cinnamon make a perfect fall flavor combo for any breakfast or snack.  Like many of our other recipes, these little fellers are packed with nutrients, which puts me at ease when I watch the kiddos devour them.  Yes, we could call these little balls of deliciousness “cookies”, but if we tell the kids that they can have cookies for breakfast or snack time, it sends the wrong message.  Plus, these are WAY healthier than any cookie!

These rounds are a cross between a cookie and a muffin.  They are the perfect finger food for little ones and kids on the go.  They freeze really well, are easy to make, and even easier to pull out of the freezer when you need them.

OK, let’s get started.  Here’s a list of supplies you’ll need:

  • Bowl
  • Spoon
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Peeler / knife
  • Grater
  • 1 ounce scooper
  • 2 baking sheets
  • Parchment paper



Every child’s ability varies depending on maturity or cognitive and physical ability.  Parents need to use their own discretion when assigning tasks.  These are general guidelines for the Apple Cinnamon Oatmeal Rounds.

Younger than 3 years old

  • Name and count ingredients with child
  • Help pour ingredients into bowl

3 – 5 years old

  • All of the younger tasks
  • Measure and count ingredients
  • Use scooper to form rounds onto baking sheet (with assistance)

6 – 7 years old

  • All of the younger tasks
  • Crack egg into bowl

8 – 9 years old

  • All of the younger tasks
  • Use grater to shred apple (remind them to watch their fingers and knuckles)

10 – 12 years old

  • All of the younger tasks
  • Use oven to bake the rounds


  • Wash everyone’s hands!
  • Clean all work surfaces before starting.
  • Leave tasting until the end. Your child might not understand the difference between a ready-to-eat ingredient and a raw unsafe ingredient.
  • It is okay for your kitchen to get a little messy.
  • Keep in mind that your child is learning, so patience is key!

  • 1 cup rolled oats
  • 1 cup white whole wheat flour
  • 2 Tablespoons ground flaxseed
  • 1 ½ teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 ¼ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt
  • 3 Tablespoons butter softened
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ½ cup applesauce
  • ½ cup pure maple syrup
  • 1 ½ cup apple peeled and grated


  • Preheat oven to 325℉.
  • Combine dry ingredient in large bowl, first 6 ingredients.
  • Add in butter, egg, vanilla, applesauce and maple syrup. Mix until evenly combined. Fold in grated apple.
  • Line 2 baking sheets with parchment paper.
  • Using a 1 ounce scoop, divide the batter among the two baking sheets. Place them in rows of 3 x 6.
  • Bake rounds for 11-13 minutes.


You will notice in the pictures above, we use a convection oven which is why we have both baking sheets in the oven at once. In a standard oven, you will either want to bake each sheet separately or rotate during baking. You may need to add a few extra minutes if you do both baking sheets at once.
